Painted in oils on a reclaimed wooden palette, this is a homage to Sean Scully, one of Holly Frean's greatest living artist heroes. Scully is pictured in a vast studio space about to use a very uncharacteristic shade of neon orange! He stands in his overalls with his back to us, facing a work-in-progress, holding an open can of paint in one hand and a loaded brush in the other as though deciding where to apply the next stroke. What is he going to do next? This work was made for a solo exhibition at Paul Smith's flagship store in London's Mayfair in 2016. A rare chance to buy an original Frean with her trademark inherent wit, painterly sensuality and art historical referencing.
