Sean Scully has indeed painted with orange although he is unlikely to have painted with this particular shade of neon! Holly Frean paints a scene employing her usual wit; her paintings first make you think, then smile at their subject. Here, Scully stands in his overalls with his back to us, facing a work-in-progress, holding an open can of paint in one hand and a loaded brush in the other as though deciding where to apply the next stroke. What will he decide?

This painting was made as for Frean's Who's Counting? exhibition at Paul Smith's shop in Mayfair, London, in 2016.
