Depicting many of Frean's artistic heroes, this assemblage of faceless characters was painted after well known self portraits from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. They stare out at the viewer, collectively summing up the historical legacy that buoys up much of contemporary painting. A homage, a folly and an altar piece all in one.
