Holly Frean's original painting of the same name (oil on recycled wooden palette, 23 x 33 cm) was made for a 2016 exhibition at Paul Smith's shop in London's Mayfair. It is a direct response to Magritte's 1946 self portrait The Son of Man, about which Magritte himself said "At least it hides the face partly. You have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present." Frean has used the thumb hole in the palette to hide Magritte's face and the green of the apple is present as swirls of oil paint embedded in the grain of the wood behind the figure in the bowler hat.
