In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Wandsworth Common, A Pack of Leaves is an open edition giclée print from Holly Frean’s ongoing ‘playing cards’ series. The original pack of cards (now sold) was painted in gouaches on 54 individual sheets of recycled cotton rag paper overlaid with monoprint drawings, and depicts 54 native and non-native tree species currently growing on Wandsworth Common. Working from home for the majority of the pandemic, and living just across the road, Holly Frean has spent much of her working day looking over the tree tops from her studio window and walking her rescue greyhound through the mini forests and across the grassy meadows of the Common. ‘I felt that painting a portrait of the trees in this way was the best tribute I could pay to the land’ - and she has pledged £25 from the sale of each print to Friends of Wandsworth Common, who has arranged for 150 saplings to be planted and maintained over the next few months. It is hoped that this year’s new trees and shrubs will connect existing areas of woodland and foster biodiversity, including rare butterfly species. More details of the project can be found on the Friends of Wandsworth website here.
