Whilst Frean finds herself in between themes, she explores new motifs by making multiple copies of an old master painting, or parts of it. This painting came to mind after spotting in the newspaper a competition launched by the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, Netherlands, appealing to artists to paint an alternative version of Vermeer’s celebrated The Girl With A Pearl Earring, which would then be displayed in place of the real thing for a limited time in the gallery (February 2023).
